Family Reunion - Kentucky Style!

Every five years my mother's family has a BIG family reunion. It's not your ordinary Sunday afternoon picnic in the park type of family reunion. I'm talking the biggest and best family reunion ever!! And the one this year was the "Granddaddy" of them all so far! It was held again this year at the farm of Mama's youngest sister and her husband. They have a beautiful 100 acre farm in Western Kentucky near where I grew up. (I'm in NW Ohio now!)
In the past our reunion lasted all weekend, but this year people started rolling in on the Tuesday prior to the 4th of July and the last of us left the Tuesday following the 4th of July! That's SEVEN days of family fun with the biggest day being Saturday when we had about 120 people there for dinner. We had five big dinners with something different every night prepared by Mama and her three sisters. Keep in mind these four fabulous cooks are all 69+ years old. A few of us "younger" family members tried to help, but we had a hard time keeping up with them.

Now you are probably wondering, besides eat, what the heck did we do for a week???? Well, let me list a few of our activities:

  • Fishing tournament

  • Billiards

  • Ping Pong

  • Card and Board Games

  • Swimming (at the farm and motel)

  • Scooters

  • Swing Set

  • Corn Hole

  • Horse Shoes

  • Ladder Ball

  • Volley Ball

  • Jigsaw Puzzle

  • Bingo

  • Auction

  • Family Feud

  • Minute to Win It

  • Hay Ride

  • Fireworks

  • Banana Split Making Contest
These are the activities that I can remember - I'm sure there were more!

The meals included: hamburgers and hotdogs; pork chops and fried chicken; catfish and BBQ pork; spaghetti and pizza; with sides like creamed corn, green beans, blackeyed peas, green peas, potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, burgoo, mashed potatoes, french fries, soup beans, corn on the cob, and fresh tomatoes. I won't even try to list all the desserts, except to say that my Aunt Janice made Lemon Pound Cake EVERY day. Of course, that was probably because my kids and grandkids gobbled them up as fast as she made them!

There was family there from coast to coast representing the following states: Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Missouri, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Tennessee. We even had family from my husband's side drop in for a visit. There was a birthday party for one of the children who had a birthday while we were there; and Baby Showers for Brittany and Tonya who were due real soon. This reunion was extra special for me because I was "reunited" with my grade school best friend who I hadn't seen for 46 years! We had a wonderful time Saturday evening catching up! And Monday my Jr/Sr high school best friend came by to visit.

It was a wonderful week and I'm already looking forward to the next reunion in 2015!!
